The Kindness Goodie Bag

Tomorrow I’m going to Jameson’s 1st grade class to talk about his differences.

I went to his Kindergarten class last year and did the same thing. I brought the book ‘We Are All Wonders‘ and talked about Jameson’s craniofacial differences. It went really well because the kids had so many questions, and I loved answering them and seeing them get a better understanding of Jameson’s differences. You could see their excitement grow as they got to know the new kid in class.

But – Jameson was so shy being put on the spot he hid behind me the whole time. So, I brainstormed ways I could alleviate his anxiety while still talking to his class this year.

My solution : The Kindness Goodie Bag. I thought if it was more like a party he might feel like all eyes are on him in a good way when I’m talking about him (because it is!).

I thought if I could illustrate ways we’re all different yet the same and promote simple acts of kindness it would also help dim the spotlight Jameson felt.

I’m still going to read the book ‘We Are All Wonders‘, but I’m going to direct the conversation to having the kids think about their differences before talking about Jameson’s. Making it more personal, so hopefully the message that we’re all different but yet we’re all so much more the same resonants a little better.

And everyone loves a Goodie Bag, right?!

Here is what I came up with ~ (everything except gummies I found at Party City!)

Puzzle Erasers: Each piece is different, but there’s a place for each piece and together it fits perfect – just like people!

Magnifying Glasses: If you look a little closer you’ll see we’re more alike than different.

Hello (my name is) Name Tags: Just saying hello and getting to know someone is all it takes to start learning all about them and finding similarities!

Toy Story Pencils: Because the theme song is “You’ve Got A Friend In Me”.

Smiley Face Gummies: A little smile goes a long way!

Chocolate “Kindness” Coins: A token of kindness is sweet!

Tell me if you’ve done a Kindness Goodie Bag, what did you put in yours?! Or any ideas and suggestions, I’d love to hear them!

❤
